Boyd signs for ELMS for fifth season with team.
United Autosports are pleased to confirm that Wayne Boyd, Rob Wheldon and Tom Gamble will join their European Le Mans Series LMP3 team for the 2020 season.
Rob Wheldon joins United Autosports for the first time, having attended a test earlier this week at Motorland Aragon, Spain where the team tested their brand new Ligier JS P320 in preparation for the new season. Rob has previously been racing Radical sportscars, with an introduction to LMP3 cars in 2019, where he won the final round of the Michelin Le Mans Cup at Portimao in 2019.
Tom Gamble is also new to the team, but despite his young age of 18, has already had success in a range of different championships and cars. He most recently raced in the Blancpain GT World Challenge Europe in an Audi R8, but has also competed in the British GT, British Formula 3 and Ginetta Junior Championships, winning the latter in 2017. In 2018 Gamble was named as McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner and still remains part of the BRDC SuperStars programme. Tom joins the team in a developmental role, planned to span multiple seasons.
Wayne Boyd has raced for the team since 2016, when he joined their LMP3 programme for their debut season. He has also raced for the United Autosports LMP2 team as well as being part of their Asian Le Mans Series line-up for the 2018/2019 season, finishing second in the championship. Wayne will bring plenty of experience to this new-look driver line-up, as well as competing in the Michelin Le Mans Cup alongside John Schauerman.
United Autosports ELMS teams are now complete, with Wayne, Rob and Tom joining previously announced Jim McGuire, Andrew Bentley and Duncan Tappy in the LMP3 team. The LMP2 team consists of Phil Hanson, Filipe Albuquerque, Alex Brundle, Will Owen and Job van Uitert. The 2020 European Le Mans Series begins with the official two-day prologue at Barcelona on 30-31 March. The first race weekend is held on 3-5 April.
Wayne Boyd, driver, United Autosports: “I’m very excited to be back for my fifth season in the ELMS with United Autosports. Also racing in the Le Mans Cup should be a huge advantage for us in terms of car set up for each weekend. My team mates Rob and Tom are both very well established and fast drivers, so as a line up we should be very strong. We have already started testing the new car for this season and it’s been very positive so far with lots learnt. I want to thank United Autosports for the opportunity.”
